Betula Extractives

Extracting Health From Nature

It’s been known for centuries that birch has healing powers, not only by Native Americans, but by cultures around the world. Russian and Northern European folk remedies have used birch based products for a variety of medicinal purposes. According to the World Health Organization, almost 60 percent of the Earth’s population still utilize traditional plant based medicine to relieve pain, heal wounds and prevent or cure diseases.

Modern science has discovered that the outer bark of the birch tree is a source of a multitude of organic compounds. These compounds are useful in a variety of nutraceutical, cosmeceutical, pharmaceutical and industrial applications.

Recent research on compounds such as lupeol, betulin, betulinic aldehyde,  and betulinic acid  has shown these compounds have potential application in cancer and HIV treatment; treatment of diabetes, cholesterol, high blood pressure, and obesity; along with antibacterial and anti fungal topical applications.

Betula Extractives also has identified other extracts that have significant benefits in skin care, personal care products, and cosmetics. We are in the process of developing formulations that can provide the basis for a multitude of applications. We expect these formulations to be available to the market in the 3rd quarter of 2012. Stay tuned for further developments.

Betula Extractives is a wholesale supplier of natural products extracted from North American birch bark.  We use the birch bark shreds left over as a byproduct of pulp and paper mill processing. Our birch sources are sustainably managed and harvested and have been certified as such.

We are a wholesale provider only and do not market any products on a retail basis. Our products are intended for use by our customers as a raw ingredient in their consumer goods. We not only have the capability to extract the natural components from birch bark, but to provide further research and processes to create specialty extracts to meet your specific needs.
